The Extra Ordinary Becomes the Extraordinary in the Magical Realism Cabaret AVANT-GUARDED
Fugly dresses. Dancing duck people. A clown made out of processed meat. Could any of this be real? Add a singing saw and a dark folk soundtrack and you've got Avant-Guarded, a cabaret for misfits and daydreamers.
Avant-Guarded is the tale of a young woman's escape from the mundane - a brand new work full of dry musings and dreamy vocals from chanteuse and pianist, Oh, Charlotte (Charlotte Kerr).
As she goes through the motions of everyday life, her tendency to daydream leads her into a strange and magical world of fantasy and adventure, of abstracted memories, nightmares, romance, and heartbreak.
Along the way she is joined by a cast of freakish and ridiculous characters, including a clown made out of processed meat, dancing ducks, a rude census taker, and a heckler who just wants to hear some Shannon Noll.
Part sketch comedy, part ridiculous fable, part fever dream. With songs by Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Jacques Brel, and more.
This production runs from 14 to 19 February. Bookings recommended.
