La Boite Presents Final Performances Of Ruben Guthrie

By: Oct. 21, 2011

David Berthold's acclaimed production of Brendan Cowell's Australian comedy Ruben Guthrie enters its final weeks at La Boite's Roundhouse Theatre.

Brendan Cowell is best known as an actor, with starring roles on TV (Tom in Love My Way), film (Noise, for which he won a Film Critics Circle Award), and on stage (as Hamlet in Bell Shakespeare's 2009 production and in Philip Seymour Hoffman's 2010 production of True West for Sydney Theatre Company).

"It's no secret I wrote this play after a year of not drinking," Cowell said. "The decision to stop came after a pretty rough bender on the sauce where I behaved in a manner that my Grandmother would not be proud of."

This Queensland premiere production is directed by La Boite Artistic Director David Berthold; his fourth production for La Boite, following Hamlet (2010 Matilda Award Winner: Best Mainstage Production), I Love You, Bro and Julius Caesar.

"I've known Brendan for many years and have seen his skill as a playwright grow," David said. "Ruben Guthrie is perhaps Brendan's most conventionally structured play, but it is also, I think, his best.

"Ruben is a gift for an actor, a bravura role full of colour. The story cracks along. The language is vibrant, idiosyncratic and utterly contemporary. It is a play both of the theatre and of the world, pulling no punches. I admire it greatly."
