LADYLIKE: A Modern Guide To Etiquette Comes to Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Comedian Louise Beuvink has hit a nerve in New Zealand with her irreverent feminist satire show, and she's bringing it to the 2018 Melbourne International Comedy Festival for her Australian debut.
Ladylike: A Modern Guide to Etiquette, directed by Lucy Noonan, opens on Monday 16 April 2018 at the iconic Melbourne venue, The Butterfly Club. With "rapid-fire lines of hilarity bursting all over the audience" (The Ruminator), the show challenges the expectations placed on women, from body image pressure to sexuality, while keeping on the silly side with hilarious anecdotes, passionate rants and generous helpings of physical and musical comedy.
Ladylike premiered at the 2017 New Zealand International Comedy Festival with sell-out seasons and extra shows added in Auckland and Wellington. "I've been blown away with how the show has resonated with people," says Beuvink. "I've had strangers coming to hug me afterwards - it's been pretty bizarre but so lovely."
In just a few years, Beuvink has risen from rookie comedian to sought-after pro on the New Zealand circuit. In 2014, Beuvink was a national finalist in the NZ Raw Comedy Quest and was also nominated for Best Female Comedian and Most Improved Comedian at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards. She's now a writer for New Zealand's most watched TV comedy, 7 Days, and is planning her Edinburgh Fringe debut with Ladylike later this year.
Beuvink is excited to bring the show to Australia and is confident Ladylike will be received just as well as it was with her Kiwi compatriots. "I know there's a hunger for this type of comedy," says Beuvink. "Just a few years ago Tony Abbott was your Minister for Women, so I've got my work cut out for me."
