It's 1945 in rural Georgia and the story follows Frankie Addams: a gangly tomboy suffering from pubescent yearnings and a sense of fretful isolation. Ignored by her widower father and excluded by the local girls, Frankie's only real friendships are with the family's maid,

Berenice, and her six-year-old cousin, John Henry. But, in the course of the weekend when Frankie's brother is set to marry, she fixates her affection on the bridal couple and determines to run away with them. The unwillingly solitary Frankie hopes that the newlyweds can be what she terms "the we of me." To read more about the author and her works, visit this New Yorker article by Hilton Als.
