Canadian Opera Company has released rehearsal footage of BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE/ERWARTUNG, a pair of one-act psychological thrillers now playing through May 16, 2026 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

Originally directed by Robert Lepage and revived by François Racine, the double bill pairs Bartók's Symbolist fairy tale BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE, in which a new wife discovers gruesome secrets behind seven locked doors in her husband's home, with Schoenberg's Modernist ERWARTUNG, in which a woman's search for her missing lover explodes into a blistering descent into madness. The Toronto Star called it "a diabolically astute pairing."

The cast features Christian Van Horn as Bluebeard, Karen Cargill as Judith, and Anna Gabler as The Woman, with Johannes Debus conducting the COC Orchestra. The creative team includes Michael Levine (set and costume design), Robert Thomson (lighting), and Laurie-Shawn Borzovoy (media effects design).

BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE is sung in Hungarian and ERWARTUNG in German, both with English and French surtitles. The performance runs approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes with one intermission. Tickets start from $45. For tickets and information, visit the Canadian Opera Company online or call ticket services at 416-363-8231.
