Video: ABT Studio Company Performs VARIATIONS FOR THREE at The Joyce Theater
The piece was commissioned by Vail Dance Festival to honor Studio Company artistic director Sascha Radetsky.
American Ballet Theatre has posted new footage of its Studio Company performing VARIATIONS FOR THREE, captured during a live performance at The Joyce Theater. The video, shot by Howard Silver, features dancers Geonhee Park, Younjae Park, and Xavier Xué in a work built around Niccolò Paganini's variations on a theme from Gioachino Rossini's opera Mosé, recorded by Patricia Zander and Yo-Yo Ma.
The choreography is by Tiler Peck, who set the piece to the Paganini score for three dancers, giving the Studio Company's emerging artists a showcase built on intricate musicality rather than large-scale ensemble work. The music, courtesy of Sony Music Entertainment, anchors a piece designed to highlight individual technique within a compact trio format.
VARIATIONS FOR THREE was commissioned by the Vail Dance Festival in honor of ABT Studio Company Artistic Director Sascha Radetsky. American Ballet Theatre is led by Artistic Director Susan Jaffe and Executive Director Barry Hughson, with the Studio Company itself overseen by Radetsky, Managing Director Claire Florian, and Rehearsal Director Yan Chen.
The performance was filmed at The Joyce Theater, which has hosted the Studio Company in other recent programming, including a suite from LA BAYADÈRE staged after Marius Petipa. That footage, also shot by Howard Silver, similarly captured the company's younger dancers tackling demanding repertory before a live audience.
