UPCOMING FROM THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC... Symphonic Duke Ellington January 15, 20-25, 2022 This January, Thomas Wilkins and the Los Angeles Philharmonic return to Ellington's music against the backdrop of our own historical moment, during which the composer's explorations of Black American history and expressive life, as well as his hopes for a more just and compassionate future, continue to resonate. Image Other Events This January: Image Prokofiev and MTT January 7-9 Acclaimed LA-born-and-raised conductor Michael Tilson Thomas conducts his own song cycle on lyric poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Tilson Thomas said he was influenced by Schubert, Mahler, and Berg in this cycle but blends that with a decidedly American point of view that the San Francisco Chronicle likened to "a Schubertian cowboy song." MTT wraps up this program with Sergei Prokofiev's inspiring war-time Symphony, one of his greatest accomplishments; its overwhelmingly uplifting spirit struck an immediate chord with audiences around the world and has done so ever since. "Ax's fleet fingerwork and the integrity of his interpretation mesmerized his audience" (The Guardian). Michael Tilson Thomas leads one of his all-time favorite works, Alban Berg's Three Pieces for Orchestra, which MTT describes as a musical journey to the "borderline of sanity and looking at what happens when our obsessions get hold of us and lead to attractive but ultimately destructive places." As a soloist, Chen has performed recitals and with orchestras all over the world. As a composer, she seeks to expand traditional organ repertoire with her own works based on Asian folksongs.
