(Linda Shelton, Executive Director) is thrilled to present Colombia's celebrated modern dance troupe, SANKOFA DANZAFRO, under the artistic direction of founder Rafael Palacios, performing his evening length work The City of Others, from October 17-21. SANKOFA DANZAFRO has received international acclaim for showcasing powerful Afro-Colombian and Afro-contemporary dance. With The City of Others, founding artistic director and choreographer Rafael Palacios continues that tradition with a high-energy, episodic evening of various dance styles, blended together with live drumming and singing, to represent a city filled with urban struggle and resilience. The ensemble of dancers and onstage musicians portray a diverse population from various cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds, aimed at highlighting the lack of opportunities granted to those who are marginalized. Their ultimate wish is to represent a city for everyone, not just a select few.

ABOUT SANKOFA DANZAFRO

"Sankofa," meaning, "to return to the root," is an African philosophy meaning the past is a keyhole through which to view the present, and to be able to consider the future. This thought has guided the Afro-Colombian SANKOFA DANZAFRO, which was founded in 1997 by Rafael Palacios. Through various pedagogical projects and creative works, SANKOFA DANZAFRO has sought to build a bridge between Afro-Colombian peoples and the African continent. The company relies on its Afro-Colombian roots in the creation of works, while also incorporating the daily, traditional, and contemporary. The company has performed in Brazil, France, Peru, Spain, Jamaica, Burkina Faso, Canada, Uruguay, China, and the United States and was awarded the 2008 National Dance Award by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia for the work San Pacho...Blessed! The company also received mention from the United Nations in 2010 for its "Good practice of Afro-descendant social inclusion in Latin America," for the company's project Steps in the Earth.

ABOUT THE Joyce Theater Foundation

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther's clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also presented dance at Lincoln Center since 2012, and launched Joyce Unleashed in 2014 to feature emerging and experimental artists. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K-12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce's annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000.

Performances of SANKOFA DANZAFRO's The City of Others will be October 17-21 at The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue at West 19th Street) as follows: Wednesday at 7:30pm; Thursday and Friday at 8pm; Saturday at 2pm and 8pm; Sunday at 2pm. There will be a post-performance Curtain Chat with members of SANKOFA DANZAFRO on Thursday, October 18, open to all patrons attending that evening's performance. A Family Matinee will take place on Saturday, October 20 at 2pm, with tickets available for kids for only $10.
