The Burlesque Blitz Announces This Week's Programming

This year The Burlesque Blitz is theming up for the times. The Blitz will be celebrating this cold cold week between Christmas and New Year's, with more readings and a lecture than Naked people. A reading of a new musical on Wednesday based on the lives of pioneering burlesque and vaudeville stars Lydia Thompson, Lillian Russell, and Kitty "Klondike Kate" Rockwell.

A lovely evening devoted to the glorious history of the Pastie, with a lecture by the lovely Rosey La Rouge accompanied by a Slide show. And The Holiday Taint Show a perennial event celebrating the awkward and beautiful time between Christmas and New Years. Bring us this week and Bring your out of town guests to see us.

The Burlesque Blitz: GUNPOWDER - Wednesday December 27, 2017

A devised work-in-progress based on the lives of pioneering burlesque and vaudeville stars Lydia Thompson, Lillian Russell, and Kitty "Klondike Kate" Rockwell. Thrilling, savvy, and full of grit, these women took the young nation by storm and commanded respect, power, and autonomy in a time when the women's vote was illegal and showing a leg risked physical and moral attack. Using everything burlesque had to offer, including wit, parody, song, dance, cross-dressing, risque costumes, and sharp political satire, these early celebrities defined their own freedom.

This lecture is all about pasties! How has construction of pasties changed over time, and how have they evolved in the neo-burlesque movement? If you want to know more about the history of the pastie and why the smallest costume pieces in burlesque are the most significant, come listen to Rosey La Rouge, author of The Pastie Project, discuss all of the above. You'll see beautiful examples of historic and modern pasties from around the world, all part of The Pastie Project photo archive. Bring a notebook and writing implement if you wish, we'll be covering a lot of info, and you may want to jot it down.
