The sculptor Viola Frey, who died in 2004, specialized in transforming kitschy flea-market figurines into works of high art-often featuring oversized men and agitated women. With fellow artists Peter Voulkos and Robert Arneson, she was part of a midcentury West Coast movement that shook up the ceramics world by deconstructing form and injecting cultural commentary (in her case, gender roles were a major theme) into sculpture.

The exhibition runs from January 26 to May 2, 2010 at the Museum of Arts and Design located at 2 Columbus Circle (at Eighth Ave.) Manhattan, NY.
