TerraNOVA Collective announces an open call for submissions to the 6th annual soloNOVA Arts Festival taking place at the D•R•2 Theatre & D-Lounge just off Union Square in NYC May 4-24, 2009. SoloNOVA is the premier festival for solo performers and visual artists in New York City. It celebrates innovative individuals who push the boundaries of what it means to be an artist, aiming to redefine the solo form through the time-honored tradition of storytelling.
"We are thrilled the festival is moving to the D•R•2 Theatre complex," Lead Curator James Carter said. "Over the years we have mounted full-length performers, late night events and visual arts exhibitions, but they have always shown in multiple venues. This marks the first year the entire festival will be under one roof."
The centerpiece of the soloNOVA Arts Festival will feature eight performers of multiple genres in music, dance, spoken word, puppetry, magic, burlesque, monologues and traditional solo plays presented in the D•R•2 Theatre. The shows will run in repertory, receiving four presentations each. Join the ranks of past performers Kim Wayans (In Living Color, My Wife and Kids), Taylor Mac (The Be[a]st of Taylor Mac, Young Ladies Of...), Roger Bonair-Agard (Def Poetry Jam, National Slam Champion), Carlos Andrés Gómez (Def Poetry Jam, Inside Man), Red Bastard (Spiegelworld, New York Clown Theater Festival) and Monica West (Dirty Dancing, Toronto).
To include all solo performers who might not fit within the definition of "mainstage," soloNOVA will also program the "Ones at Ten" series for artists with pieces of 20 minutes or less. These short forms typically include singer/songwriters, burlesque/variety acts, spoken word, stand up comedy and party DJs. Three genre-themed nights will take place in the D-Lounge, a 75-seat cabaret-style venue below the D•R•2 Theatre, at 10:00pm after the mainstage shows.
Rounding out the festival, soloNOVA will select two visual artists to receive solo shows in the lobbies of the D•R•2 Theatre and the D-Lounge for the duration of the festival. All mediums are welcome to apply.
