Santiago Mitre's THE STUDENT and More Set for MoMA's Film Events, Aug-Oct 2013

MoMA Presents: Sebastián Silva and Pedro Peirano's Old Cats
August 20-26
Unfolding with black humor and empathy in equal measure, Old Cats tells the story of Isadora, an octogenarian living comfortably with her husband and two cats, who suddenly finds herself fighting two battles when the sudden onset of dementia coincides with the possible loss of her Santiago apartment. A hit at the Cannes and New York film festivals in 2010, this is the film's long-awaited theatrical run in the U.S. The opening-night screeningwill be introduced by Sebastián Silva.

MoMA Presents: Santiago Mitre's The Student
August 22-28
Winner of Special Jury Prizes at BAFICI (Buenos Aires) and Locarno, and a highlight of the New York Film Festival, The Student is a sophisticated and subtle meditation on the still-unhealed wounds of Argentina's Dirty War, and on the clash between old-guard Peronists and a younger generation of leftist activists in Buenos Aires today. Santiago Mitre, who introduces the opening-night screening, proves himself one of the most provocative voices of contemporary Argentine cinema.

Soundings: A Contemporary Score, the Film Program
Through August 19
Held in conjunction with the gallery exhibitionSoundings: A Contemporary Score, this screening series is as much an exploration of sound as of the moving image, focusing on documentary and "essay" films that take viewers to unusual sonic realms.

Dirty Looks at MoMA: Mining the Collection
Through October 31
Dirty Looks NYC, a platform for queer experimental film and video, goes on location-to the film collection at MoMA-staging alternative screening interventions at MoMA and MoMA PS1 throughout the summer and fall. On August 22, Lothar Lambert's 1 Berlin-Harlem (1974) screens in the Marron Atrium.

An Auteurist History of Film
Ongoing
This ongoing screening cycle explores the evolution of film as a medium by charting the careers of several key directorial figures-not in order to establish a formal canon, but to develop one picture of cinematic history. Upcoming screenings include John Cassavetes' Shadows and Karel Reisz'sSaturday Night and Sunday Morning (both 1960).

Big news for MoMA Film fans: film tickets are now available for online purchase at MoMA.org. And MoMA is now open to the public seven days per week, which expands the screening schedule to include Tuesdays.
