The composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is the most important artist to work in the American musical theatre over the past half-century. He has not only collaborated on more than a dozen landmark shows and written countless standard songs, but has also been the single most influential force in bringing the Broadway musical into the modern age.

His most famous scores include: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins, as well as the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy. He was president of the Dramatists Guild" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dramatists_Guild">Dramatists Guild from 1973 to 1981.
