STAGE TUBE: 'JULIE & JULIA' Star Streep Shows Off Her 'Musical Skills' On Tonight Show!

By:

Meryl Streep, the star of 'Julie & Julia,' sat down with Conan O'Brien on The Tonight Show last night, Monday July 27th and explained what it was like to play the larger-than-life, culinary legend Julia Child. She also showed off her musical skills as she debuted an original song - on a concertina she "can't play." You can watch the clip right here on STAGE TUBE.

Julie & Julia is an upcoming 2009 comedy-drama film, written and directed by Nora Ephron, depicting events in the life of famed chef Julia Child. Ephron's screenplay is adapted from two books: My Life in France, Child's autobiography, written with Alex Prud'homme, and a memoir by Julie Powell. In August 2002, Powell started documenting online her daily experiences cooking each of the 524 recipes in Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and she later began reworking that blog, The Julie/Julia Project, into a book, Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen (Little, Brown, 2005). The paperback was retitled Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously (Back Bay Books, 2006).

In the first major motion picture based on a blog, Meryl Streep portrays Julia Child, and Amy Adams appears as Julie Powell. The film is scheduled for August 7, 2009 release. Meryl Streep recently starred in the big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway play 'DOUBT' as the stern Sister Aloysius alongside her 'Julie & Julia co-star Amy Adams.

Streep was up for an Academy Award for her performance in The Devil Wears Prada. She is a two-time Oscar winner for Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie's Choice. Other film credits include The Deer Hunter, Silkwood, Out of Africa, Postcards from The Edge, Heartburn, The Bridges of Madison Countyand Adaptation. She was last seen on screen as Donna in the film version of the Broadway hit Mamma Mia!. Her many theatre credits include Trelawney of the 'Wells,' The Taming of the Shrew, Happy End, The Cherry Orchard, The Seagull and Mother Courage (she starred in the latter two at the Delacorte Theatre).

Streep has received 15 Academy Award nominations and 23 Golden Globe nominations (winning six), more than any other person in film history. Her work has also earned her two Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Cannes Film Festival award, three New York Film Critics Circle Awards, four Grammy Award nominations, a BAFTA award, and a Tony Award nomination.

Conan O'Brien, the dominant late-night host at 12:35 a.m. (ET) for the past 14 seasons, succeeded Jay Leno as host of the preeminent series on late-night television, NBC's "The Tonight Show," on June 1, 2009.

"The Tonight Show" continues to be the most dominant late-night institution in television history. Since it first premiered on September 27, 1954 with Steve Allen, "The Tonight Show" has had just four permanent hosts, including Leno. Allen, host of the then titled "Tonight," eventually left late night to start his own primetime variety series on NBC. Jack Paar premiered on July 29, 1957. On October 1, 1962, Johnny Carson stepped on stage for day one of his tenure as host of "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Leno, who began guest-hosting "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" in September 1987, became host of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on May 25, 1992. O'Brien joined NBC as a writer on "Saturday Night Live" in 1988 and premiered as host of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" on September 13, 1993.

"The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" now originates from Stage 1 at Universal Studios in Los Angeles and will be produced by Universal Media Studios. Jeff Ross is the executive producer.
