SPRAYWATCH: A BEAUTIFUL RESCUE Will Come to Edinburgh Fringe
Performances will run 7 – 15 August and 17-29 August.
Spraywatch: A Beautiful Rescue, a new original musical comedy inspired by an iconic American 90s lifeguard drama set in a fictional British seaside town will come to theSpace @ Niddry, Lower Theatre, 7 – 15 August and 17-29 August.
Diving into the heart of British seaside culture with a soundtrack inspired by 80s and 90s pop rock bangers, Spraywatch: A Beautiful Rescue imagines what would happen if everyone's favourite red swimsuit clad 90's lifeguard was transported from the sun-soaked beaches of Santa Monica to the decidedly greyer fictional English coastal town. Washed up and desperate to get home, she has one shot: whip the local lifeguards and the town itself into shape and top the global beach rankings. But the waters of Spray run darker than they appear and something sinister lurks beneath the waves, threatening to drag her plans under. As the pressure mounts and the cracks begin to show, it becomes clear all isn't as it seems and she must confront the murky underbelly of beauty, ambition, identity and belonging.
Writer Hywel Evans said, “I grew up in the 90's fascinated by two main bizarre things - The Muppets and glamorous mainstream TV. I wanted to explore ideas of perfection relevant today but ultimately leave the audience with the feeling I got from The Muppets - happiness. The show doesn't contain muppets. It's a vibe."
Cast member and executive producer Abbie Ashall said ‘'Expect a parody and you'll be surprised. This show is as hilarious as it is unexpectedly moving — a big, bold musical with something real to say.”
