On the heels of the news that Penguin Rep Theatre had extended the run of its acclaimed 2009 season-opener, Tom Dudzick's comedy Our Lady of South Division Street, executive director Andrew M. Horn announced today that the company had just been awarded a grant from The Shubert Foundation, a prominent grant-maker to nonprofit theatres and dance companies throughout the United States.

"We are thrilled to receive the $5,000 grant from The Shubert Foundation," said Mr. Horn, "especially at a time when Penguin, like so many nonprofit professional theatres, is struggling to meet budget commitments and compensate for a decline in donations and government funding".

According to its guidelines, the Foundation funds American not-for-profit professional theatre and dance companies, providing unrestricTed Grants for general operating support to "organizations that have established an artistic and administrative track record, as well as a pattern of fiscal responsibility".

The Penguin Rep Theatre, now celebrating its 32nd season, performs at the intimate Barn Theatre in Stony Point (Rockland County), New York. Following the world premiere production of Our Lady of South Division Street, which will be performed through June 14, the professional Equity theatre will present The Wonder Bread Years, Pat Hazell's entertaining and comedic salute to Baby Boomer culture comedy (June 26 - July 19); Carter W. Lewis' comedy Women Who Steal about a pair of restless middle-aged women who drive head-first into love, life and the perils of marriage (August 7 - August 30); and the world premiere of Obie Award-winner Daniel Beaty's Breath and Imagination, a musical play about Roland Hayes, the first world-renowned African-American vocalist (October 2 - October 25).
