Orchestra of St. Luke's Plays Bohemian Rhapsodies Thru 5/8

Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) brings its 2010-2011 Chamber Music Series to a close with four performances of Bohemian Rhapsodies, an opulent program of Romantic quartets, from April 30, 2011 to Sunday, May 8, 2011. The acclaimed St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble will perform piano quartets by Romantic giants Schumann and Mahler and a double-cello quartet by the late 19th century Russian composer Anton Arensky. The four concerts will take place at The Morgan Library & Museum, Brooklyn Museum and Dia:Beacon.

Pianist Benjamin Hochman, recent recipient of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant that is awarded to instrumentalists who demonstrate great promise in their solo careers, makes his OSL debut in the Mahler and Schumann piano quartets-two works that were written during earlier chapters of each composer's career. Noted for his clear and fluid style, Hochman will add St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble to the growing list of top chamber ensembles with which he has collaborated.

As audiences across the world observe the centenary year of Mahler's death in 2011, the composer's Piano Quartet reveals the evolution of his compositional style. The Piano Quartet is the only chamber work to survive from Mahler's time at the Vienna Conservatory and offers an interesting contrast with the composer's later works by echoing the German Romantic tradition. Arensky's String Quartet also pays homage to his Romantic forbearers: composed just after the death of his mentor Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the second movement borrows a theme from Tchaikovsky's Children's Songs. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Arensky's birth. Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet reveals the composer's quintessential Romantic style during 1842, his infamous "year of chamber music."Orchestra of St. Luke's next concerts will take place from June 25, 2011 to July 30, 2011 as part of its annual summer residency at Caramoor International Music Festival.
