New York Story: Jerome Robbins and His World will be on view in the Donald and Mary Oenslager Gallery from Tuesday, March 25 through Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

Through costumes, designs, preliminary sketches, photographs, and rare film footage, the evergreen works and worlds of Jerome Robbins unfold. The exhibition explores what made him tick artistically and why his work is still fresh and vital today. This American artist, whose hallmark was the artless look of his artistry, was equally at home on Broadway and on the ballet stage. He burst upon the scene with his first ballet, Fancy Free, about three sailors on leave in New York and the girls they fall for, and shaped 13 Broadway musicals, including West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, and Gypsy, through his choreography and direction. This year, which marks the tenth anniversary of his death, will see a Robbins Festival at the New York City Ballet and a revival of Gypsy on Broadway.
