The Ailey Extension offered free dance classes to over 50 New York teens on Sunday, April 10th. Youth Dance Day, a partnership with National Dance Week- NYC; The Ailey Extension; Billy Elliot the Musical and First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move, highlighted the benefits of dance on teen health and fitness. The event included lessons from popular Ailey Extension instructors and the cast of Broadway's Billy Elliot the Musical, free giveaways, complimentary lunch and more.

Youth Dance Day kicked off with a Contemporary Jazz class led by Ailey Extension Director Lisa Johnson-Willingham, followed by a vibrant Hip Hop class with Ailey Extension's Keith Alexander. Next, Billy Elliot's Ballet Girls took center stage, teaching the teens steps from one of musical's most popular numbers - "Shine". The event culminated with a mini performance by the participants and a nutrition workshop with complimentary lunch.

Youth Dance Day also launched The Ailey Extension's new Teen Extension series, a program designed to promote teen health and build self-esteem through dance. "I am thrilled that The Ailey Extension could be a part of this event," says Ailey Extension Director, Lisa Johnson-Willingham. "It is so crucial that we teach our young people the importance of active and healthy living - what better way to do that than through dance!"
