Music Review: Brandi Burkhardt Captures That Feeling Of Falling Hopelessly In Love With Her New Single DAYDREAM

This week’s music entry in the BobbyFiles comes from Broadway and TV veteran Brandi Burkhardt, who recently released her latest single, DAYDREAM. A blend of Newwave and Pop, this brand-new love song is almost hypnotic, while still being a tune you can dance to. Burkhardt herself is of the Britney/Christina Aguilera generation, but this song transcends their aesthetic in a lot of key ways. Performance-wise, Brandi’s clear smooth legit Broadway soprano has altered into a present-day pop sound, but with her classical training supplying power behind it from start to finish. She comes from the musical theatre stage, and it shows. Her voice is a superior instrument, and the fact she can bend that trained voice into an uber-modern “pop-diva” sound is wonderful. The voice and the song are ripe for the picking by our fellow gays just as is, OR for the circuit party dance floor. It is amazing that this lady, whose origins lean more into the Great White Way than the Top/Pop 40, can ratchet back and give it such a hip sound. Don’t believe Bobby? The imagery is poetic and beautiful - juxtaposed with the song's minor key giving it gravitas and lifting it above “Bubblegum Town.” The story being told is that of a woman who has fallen in love, and it’s all stars and RAINBOWS, but talk of the future has become irresistible. She sees this going on forever in her daydream, the mists of her enduring love “fantasy” swirl and mix and are both dizzying, as well as clarifying. This is the moment that love feels like forever for the first time, hearts flutter, and breath quickens as the inevitable fall is happening. 

DAYDREAM is part of Burkhardt's upcoming EP, releasing in 2024, having been created in collaboration with other composers, but this cut is entirely Brandi’s own composition, in both words and music. For the recording, producer Nate Lanzino played everything on the track and did the entire treatment of the song.  He starts with a gorgeous guitar line and then mixes it with keys, synth, organ, and percussion, and who knows what else? The beat is slow but completely danceable. The recording is solid but pliable enough for mixing by a top-notch DJ for the club scene - a wise move, as there is as much gold in them thar hills as there is in this song. DAYDREAM may not give you earworms throughout your day, but it will stay with you, nonetheless. It is lush in its sound and Brandi’s light vocal touch keeps it from landing too hard.
