League of Professional Theatre Women Awards 'Seal of Approval' to FUN HOME

The League of Professional Theatre Women (LPTW), a not-for-profit organization promoting visibility and increased opportunities for women in the field, is pleased to present Broadway's Tony Award-winning FUN HOME with its inaugural Seal of Approval, for setting an inspiring precedent for women in theatre.

In July 2015, LPTW will launch its Seal of Approval, honoring leaders in the theatre community who have demonstrated commitment to gender parity in their hiring practices. Like the Good Housekeeping seal, it will be a recognizable icon. The icon will be provided to recipients to be displayed in playbills, on web sites, and in printed promotional materials. By commending theatres when they put parity into practice, LPTW will celebrate and encourage the hiring of women in the theatre and the producing of work by women.

The LPTW Seal of Approval will be given exclusively to theatres, as evaluated by the findings in the upcoming LPTW Report on Hiring Women Off-Broadway (2010-2015). But to inaugurate the seal, LPTW is granting a special seal of approval to honor a production: the groundbreaking FUN HOME on Broadway currently playing at Circle in the Square Theatre.

Currently there is still a glass ceiling, known as a "glass curtain" in our industry--for instance fewer than 20% of plays produced in the U.S. are written by women. FUN HOME made history this month when it became the first musical in which an all-female writing team won Tony Awards: Lisa Kron (Book and Lyrics) and Jeanine Tesori (Music). It also won three other Tony Awards including best musical.
