In Entertainment Weekly's new cover story (on newstands Friday), Lady Gaga discusses her upcoming role as the Countess, a murderous employee at the fictional Hotel Cortez in L.A. in AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL.

"I've just been weeping while I'm here because I have returned to something I've believed in so much, which is the art of darkness," explains the singer. "It's not something that everyone understands, but, for the people that do - Horror Story fans, my fans - there is a true connection between us, and it's a language within itself."

She adds that joining the cast of the FX anthology series is a dream come true for her. "I always wanted to be an actress," she shares. "I was terrible at auditioning. I would clam up. I was very awkward. I wasn't particularly pretty in high school. I was sort of ... blooming. Now I'm here."

Co-creator Ryan Murphy tells EW how the 29-year-old mega star was very excited to get to work on the gory project. "She showed up, and she was wearing diamond pasties, a Band-Aid on her boo-ha, heels and a black veil that Alexander McQueen made for her on the day before his death," says Murphy. "Then the crew gasped in delight, and we were off!"

Says AHS veteran Kathy Bates of her new co-star, "We've shot one scene together. She walked past me and literally had one line, and it just scared the s--- out of me. She's really throwing herself in this."

The 13-episode fifth installment of the Emmy and Golden Globe winning franchise, American Horror Story: Hotel, premieres on FX on October 7th.
