Theatre veterans Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen and Peter Morgan are among the winners of the 2006 Los Angeles Film Critics Awards.

In addition, Jennifer Hudson - who stars as Effie in the critically acclaimed film version of Dreamgirls - placed as runner-up in the category of Best Supporting Actress (Luminita Gheorghiu, of The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, won).  Dreamgirls, directed by and with an adapted screenplay by Bill Condon, was also recently chosen as one of the American Film Institute's Top 10 Films of 2006.

Mirren, Sheen and Morgan all worked on the political drama The Queen, directed by Stephen Frears.  Mirren picked up the LAFC Award for Best Actress, while Sheen won Best Supporting Actor and Frost/Nixon playwright Morgan scored for Best Screenplay.

Sacha Baron Cohen, who was recently announced to appear as Pirelli in Tim Burton's upcoming movie musical version of Sweeney Todd, received the Best Actor Award for his turn in the bumbling title role of Borat.

Other LAFC winners this year included Clint Eastwood's film Letters from Iwo Jima, which took Best Picture of the Year, and Paul Greengrass, who won Best Director for United 93.
