John Coulter's THE NEW MYTHOLOGY Opens Today at The Gallery at EarthWE
Artist John Coulter continues his exploration of the affinity between Tribal (Primitive) Art and Modern Art with his latest exhibition The New Mythology opening today, October 10th at The Gallery at EarthWE @ Bergamot Station. The New Mythology further expands Coulter's interpretations of human and totemistic figures. Depicted with charcoal pencil, oil, acrylic and watercolor, Coulter's 35 drawings and paintings are a fusion of atavistic forms and present-day icons, grounded in the Modern Primitivism style.
The blending of tribal and contemporary art styles is referred to as Modern Primitivism, a movement that looks outside one's culture to discover new perspectives and modes of interpretation in primitive societies. A fascination with all things primitive lies at the heart of Coulter's work.
After studying at the Chicago Art Institute, the University of Illinois and UCLA, Coulter became a well-know graphic designer in Los Angeles. During his career, he created CD packaging and logos for some of the world's most successful recording artists, including Madonna, Janet and Michael Jackson, Elton John and Barbra Streisand. In 2007, after a successful career in the music business, he decided to pursue fine art, inspired by Picasso's studies of tribal forms.
"Tribal art puts us in touch with primordial nature and our subconscious. It opens an inner awareness filled with embryonic forms waiting to be reshaped in the realm of conscious experience," says Coulter. The synthesis of primitive icons and contemporary forms is the basis of Coulter's work, which he calls "The New Mythology."
