Jackman Announces Winners Of $100K Twitter Charity Pledge

Hollywood and Broadway superstar Hugh Jackman has announced the non-profit organizations Charity: Water and Operation of Hope will each receive $50,000 as part of his Twitter charity pledge.

Jackman called in to Ryan Seacrest's radio show to announce the $100,000 gift will be split between two organizations; Charity: Water, which provides clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations, and Operation of Hope, an organization of doctors who volunteer to perform free facial reconstructive surgeries for children in developing countries.

Jackman first made the announcement that he would donate $100,000 to one charity via Twitter on April 14. The actor encouraged his fellow Twitterers to post their favorite charities and causes, in order to help him make his selection.

"Your suggestions have been informative, touching and inspiring. Please keep them coming. You are educating thousands by sharing your causes," Jackman stated via Twitter.

Charity: Water is a non-profit initiative based in New York City focused on bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Founded in 2006, charity: water has helped fund 1,247 projects, in 14 countries bringing clean, safe water to 669,045 people. For more information, visit charitywater.org

Operation of Hope is a not-for-profit medical foundation started in 1989 to perform facial surgeries on poor children around the world. Operation of Hope is an all-volunteer medical team that donates surgeries to children in developing countries born with facial deformities. For more information, visit operationofhope.org

Hugh Jackman annouced on April 14th that he would donate $100,000 to charity. Jackman utilized his Twitter.com page to allow individuals to submit their most worthwhile non-profit charities for consideration. 

Jackman wrote on his official Twitter page: "I will donate 100K to one individual's favourite non profit organisation. Of course, you must convince me why by using 140 characters or less. "The more passion shown for your charity the better! Get the support of your friends and teach them the importance of giving."

In 2000, Hugh Jackman was cast as Wolverine in Bryan Singer's X-Men. Jackman later reprised his role in 2003's X2: X-Men United, and 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. Jackman starred as Leopold in the 2001 romantic comedy film Kate & Leopold, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Jackman also starred in 2001 action/drama Swordfish, along with John Travolta, and Halle Berry.

Jackman sang the role of Billy Bigelow in Carousel in a special concert performance at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan, New York City in 2002. In 2004 he played the title role of vampire hunter Gabriel Van Helsing in Van Helsing. In 2004, Jackman won a Tony Award for his Broadway portrayal of Australian songwriter and performer Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz. He hosted the Tony Awards in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Jackman's other stage credits include "Carousel," "Oklahoma!" "Sunset Boulevard" and "Beauty and the Beast."
