Hudson Valley Announces Special Events For All Ages

Historic Hudson Valley announces their upcoming events and festivals. The first runs from April 17-18 (Saturday-Sunday) and is called Sheep-to-Shawl.
Philipsburg Manor, 381 North Broadway (Route 9), Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. April 17-18, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Celebrate the arrival of spring on The Farm! Sheep-shearing, dyeing wool, and weaving cloth are just some of the weekend's activities. Scottish border collies display their skills with sheep-herding demonstrations throughout the day while newborn lambs frolic. Visitors are invited to explore each step in the process of turning wool into cloth using 18th-century techniques. Admission: $12; $10 for seniors; $6 for children 5-17. May 16 (Sunday)Pinkster Festival
Philipsburg Manor, 381 North Broadway (Route 9), Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. May 16, noon to 6 p.m. An African-American celebration of spring, Pinkster was held in the Hudson Valley as early as the 17th century. Filled with music, dance, food, and revelry, this cross-cultural festival re-creates the spring holiday with a rousing colonial-style celebration. Festivities include lively presentations of drumming and traditional dance, African folktales, and demonstrations of traditional African instruments and utilitarian wares. Animals & Acrobats
Van Cortlandt Manor, 525 South Riverside Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. May 29-31, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. An early American traveling circus with continuous performances throughout the weekend, the event features Flight of the Raptor demonstrations with Jennifer Pena, a giant mastodon skeleton replica, tumbling acrobats, tightrope walkers, jugglers, magicians, fortune-tellers, mimes, storytellers, horse-drawn wagon rides, music, and more! Porch Party fund-raiser
Montgomery Place, River Road, Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. June 5. The community will have an opportunity to gather at Montgomery Place in support of its preservation and programs at this first annual "Porch Party" fund-raiser. Catered as a partial gift from the Madalin Hotel in Tivoli, the event will present the season's first fruits from Montgomery Place Orchards and feature wine contributed by Millbrook Vineyards. Hands-on Heritage Crafts
Van Cortlandt Manor, 525 South Riverside Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. June 12-13, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This event features plenty of hands-on opportunities for all family members. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to take part in historic tasks and crafts. Make your own candles, sew a medicine bag and fill it with dried botanicals, operate the blacksmith's bellows, and take part in spinning, weaving, coopering, tinsmithing, hewing wood, quilting, open-hearth cooking, butter churning, cheese-making, and more. Independence Day 1800
Van Cortlandt Manor, 525 South Riverside Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. July 4, noon to 6 p.m. Festivities begin with the roar of the cannon and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. All are invited to join the Independence Day Parade through the manor along with its costumed residents. Stirring patriotic speeches and songs follow the parade, and military re-enactors invite one and all to drill and muster. Children and adults can experience military camp life through hands-on activities. Food and beverages are available, or visitors can bring a picnic lunch. Children ages 9-11 can have fun while experiencing the daily life of the 18th and 19th-century. Summerweek, a day camp that uses the resources of Historic Hudson Valley's sites to re-create America's early days, is a program for active kids with curious minds and vivid imaginations. Experienced classroom teachers, along with costumed interpreters, lead students in an exploration of daily colonial life, both work and play. 9:30-3:30 daily. Riverweek Day Camp

River Day
