History of Jazz Shrines

· The Jazz Shrines of Harlem program is informed by a similar festival, produced by 651ARTs in Brooklyn. In 1999, under the direction of Mikki Shepard (now Executive Producer at The Apollo Theater), the Brooklyn-based arts organization gathered a diverse consortium of presenting partners to produce a national Lost Jazz Shrines festival. That festival focused on the numerous clubs, concert and dance halls located throughout the United States in African American communities where jazz music evolved, from its folk roots to a popular music and to eventually become America's "classical" music. The focus of Jozen's feature is how the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival is aiming to recapture the golden age of jazz in Harlem, through the opening of Minton's, the recreation of Small's Paradise, and it's return to the Apollo.

At the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival, pianist/composer Geri Allen takes the "jam" to new ground with her band, Time Line, at the Apollo Music Café, 253 West 125th Street, on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, at 10:00 pm each night.
