Feature: Nevada Ballet Theatre Presents the Whimsical Hansel and Gretel May 15-24

A fairy tale comes to life when the Nevada Ballet Theatre presents Hansel and Gretel at The Smith Center from May 15-24.

This original version features a bold re-interpretation of the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale and follows the dangerous and adventurous journey of two young children who traverse an extraordinary and treacherous land filled with many very real challenges - including being captured by the Ice Cream Witch, who has a most unusual quality when it comes to baking children! Audiences will be surrounded by incredible visual fantasy, providing endless scope for the imagination and offering many surprises along the way. The elements of mystery and demonic evil will culminate in a dramatic ballet that blends innocence and darkness.

The compositions were written by Claire Cowan, and the choreography was developed by Loughlan Prior. The design of the show has been inspired by film noir's black-and-white movies of the 1930s, with Buster Keaton as a retired silent movie star, where the character is symbolically represented in many different forms. This will be done by using theatre's style of telling stories through comedy in Van'e'ville, and performing dramatic choreography with a combination of exciting movement and amazing visuals on stage. The audience will leave inspired and wanting to be a part of the overall show.

Additionally, the production boasts beautiful costumes designed by Academy Award-winning designer Kate Hawley (Crimson Peak; Pacific Rim; Frankenstein). Through creative costuming, an assortment of amazing projections, and unique staged elements, a fantastic world is created where sweetness is seen on top but evil lies below the surface.

The enchanting adaptation of Hansel and Gretel awaits. Audiences will take pleasure in joining two adventurous children on their journey, filled with quirky, whimsical character interactions. The journey begins when they meet a multitude of fantastically inventive characters who will surprise at every turn and entertain with unique, humorous skits. This venture was based on the original story of Hansel and Gretel, which has endured through the ages. It is about the hardships and trials children experienced at different periods of history. It is about the hope children had for a better life. And above all, it is about how good conquers evil throughout all time.

With its unique and engaging theatrical elements, this production will be one of the most unforgettable theatrical experiences audiences will ever witness, appealing to everyone of all ages. The generations will have the opportunity to see how these tales still resonate and feature many things in common today. Combined with its expansive and fascinating cinematic influences, this Las Vegas premiere will leave audiences breathless with excitement for many years to come.

Audiences should prepare to enter a world where nothing is quite as it seems and every sweet surprise may hide a deliciously dark twist. Share the excitement and get ready for an experience full of surprises.

Performances of Hansel and Gretel will be held at Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center, May 15-24. For more info, visit The Smith Center and Nevada Ballet Theatre.
