EDINBURGH 2018: BWW Q&A- John Luke Roberts

BWW catches up with John Luke Roberts to chat about bringing All I Wanna Do Is [FX: GUNSHOTS] with a [FX: GUN RELOADING] and a [FX: CASH REGISTER] and Perform Some Comedy to the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

How are you managing to fit your show title on posters?

Judicious use of emojis. I'm basically aiming to have such a confusing title that come to see it out of spite.

Tell us a bit about I Wanna Do Is [FX: GUNSHOTS] With a [FX: GUN RELOADING] and a [FX: CASH REGISTER] and Perform Some Comedy!

It's a fat-paced hour of stupidity; or an hour of weird character comedy; or a cogent defence of absurdist comedy told largely through the device of 24 fictional Spice Girls (Mal A and Mels D through Z). The aim is to assault the audience with so many jokes and ideas and characters that they feel drunk at the end. Then, I read a manifesto and everyone agrees.

Having performed a number of times at the festival do you think you know what to expect?

Yes. I will feel nervous when I get off the train in Waverley and smell the hops. I will feel relieved when I have performed the first preview. I will be driven from the town with pitch forks, before being welcomed back like a hero once I defeat the dragon who has been eating the townsfolk.

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

I think everyone should come to see me. Otherwise, how will they know whether they like me?

And who would you recommend maybe doesn't?

The person who didn't like my show last year and wrote the online review "I love absurdists, but this didn't make any sense". That is a better sentence than I will ever write.
