Liz Smith reports in Variety that the ladies and lovers of Wisteria Lane might soon be bursting into song.

Creator-producer Marc Cherry may pen a musical episode for the hit ABC primetime comedy soap, which stars Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Nicollette Sheridan and Eva Longoria.

Smith writes: "Teri Hatcher, at the least, is up to the challenge. She's done a good deal of warbling, including a Chicago production of Cabaret a few years back, and, recently, a slinky, semi-secret stint in a Hollywood nightspot. Those who've seen Hatcher in her singer mode, say she is impressive -- sultry and sexy. As for the rest -- Nicollette Sheridan recently sang a duet with her beloved, Michael Bolton, on his last CD. And somehow I have the feeling that the spirit of lively competitiveness will allow Huffman, Cross and Longoria to sing like birds when push comes to high C."

"Desperate Housewives," which premiered in 2004, concerns sex in suburbia and airs from 9 to 10 PM on Sundays.  Cherry is a proud Stephen Sondheim fan, incidentally, and has titled numerous episodes after Sondheim songs.
