Commissioned by Clean Valley Council and developed during their artist residency on the Governors Island, sponsored by Works on Water, 'Voices From The Roanoke River' looks into the various environmental and social impacts on the Roanoke River and seeks to inspire action to protect the water.

Currently, the Roanoke River, which runs through Virginia and North Carolina, faces many threats like littering, damaging agricultural practices and constructions in the floodplains. Stormwater pollution is also compromising the river's ecosystem as well as the river's course. The play has been created through historical research, interviews with community members, and mapping the river and its threats from the headwater to the mouth.

The founders of Creative Traffic Flow, DawN Crandell, Jeesun Choi and Kristin Rose Kelly, wrote this play through a collaborative playwriting process, drawing heavily from documentary theater, spoken word, and character-based theater-making.

"Through this play, we want to present the environmental issues through a personal, human perspective and also show how the river herself can tell the story," Jeesun said. "We focused a lot on how the Roanoke River is not just a backdrop or a topic that characters talk about, but also an embodied being in the play."

'Voices From The Roanoke River' will later be performed at Earth Summit in Roanoke, Virginia on Friday November 2, 2018 at Virginia Western Community College, 3094 Colonial Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24015. Earth Summit, sponsored by Clean Valley Council (CVC), is a day-long event designed to explore and understand current environmental topics. Attendees will meet with local environmental professionals, participate in break-out sessions, and connect with like-minded peers.
