Cengage Announces New Author Team for Best-Selling James Stewart Calculus Franchise

BOSTON, March 22, 2018 /PRNewswire/ Cengage, an education and technology company, today announced the author team who will continue the best-selling James Stewart Calculus franchise. Lothar Redlin and Saleem Watson, who received doctorate degrees under Stewart's instruction, and Daniel Clegg, a former colleague of Stewart's, will author the revised series, which has been used by more than 8 million students over the last fifteen years. The new edition is expected to release in December 2019.

About the Authors:

  • Lothar Redlin is a Professor of Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, specializing in the field of Topology. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria, and his Ph.D. from McMaster University. Redlin co-authored the best-selling Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus with Stewart and Watson.
  • Saleem Watson is a Professor of Mathematics at California State University, Long Beach, specializing in the field of Functional Analysis. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Andrews University in Michigan and did graduate studies at Dalhousie University and McMaster University, where he received his Ph.D. Watson co-authored the best-selling Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus with Stewart and Redlin.
  • Daniel Clegg is a Professor of Mathematics at Palomar College. He received his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton and his M.A. in Mathematics from UCLA. He assisted Stewart with various aspects of his calculus texts and is the co-author with Stewart of the textbook Brief Applied Calculus.

"Success in Calculus contributes to a well-rounded, comprehensive education that prepares students for the workforce," said Erin Joyner, Senior Vice President of Product Management, Cengage. "We are thrilled to work with these accomplished professors to continue the Stewart series for a new generation of learners. Their passion for helping students understand difficult concepts, coupled with our commitment to access and affordability, will ensure that millions more students master the subject."

"The many years that I spent co-authoring mathematics textbooks with Professor Stewart have shown me that his talent for teaching was only matched by his talent for student-oriented mathematical exposition," said Redlin. "I am pleased that we can continue revising his calculus texts in the same easy-going expository style that has already enriched the mathematical studies of countless students."

"Professor Stewart wanted students to read and understand his calculus texts; he always kept students in mind when writing each sentence, example, or exercise," said Watson. "As his longtime co-authors, we can collectively say that Professor Stewart's gentle and patient guidance was the key factor in the development of our own approach to textbook authorship."

"I worked closely with Professor Stewart on many aspects of his Calculus texts for nearly two decades; he was a mentor and an inspiration for me in both writing and teaching mathematics," said Clegg. "A paragraph would be traded back and forth, revised and refined at each stage, until wefelt it had been perfected, and the book emerged better for it. Writing with Jim was a truly gratifying experience."

The Stewart Franchise is part of Cengage Unlimited, a first-of-its-kind subscription that gives students access to all the company's digital higher education materials more than 22,000 products across 70 disciplines for $119.99 a semester, no matter how many Cengage materials they use.

Stewart, who passed away in 2014, was a world-renowned author and mathematician publishing more than 70 textbooks over the course of his life. He received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was the author of the best-selling calculus textbook series, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.
