CAROLINE, OR CHANGE, the new musical by playwright-librettist Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori, directed by George C. Wolfe, will play its final performance at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Sunday, August 29th at 3pm. The production will have played 23 previews and 136 regular performances.
Following its critically acclaimed run at The Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE opened on Sunday, May 2nd at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre (230 West 49th Street). CAROLINE, OR CHANGE began previews on Monday, April 12th. CAROLINE, OR CHANGE began previews at The Public Theater on Wednesday, October 29th, 2003 and it opened officially on Sunday, November 30th. It played its final performance on Sunday, February 1st, 2004 for a total of 106 performances.The CAROLINE, OR CHANGE original Broadway cast recording was released on June 29th by Hollywood Records. Caroline is the black maid of a Southern family, made up of a father, his new wife and the man's young son. The son's birth mother has recently died, and the stepmother is trying to establish a relationship with the child, who already has a close connection with Caroline. The title has a double meaning, referring to the myriad social changes swirling around the family and a family argument surrounding the spare change perpetually found in the boy's pants pockets.
