CANNABIS! A VIPER VAUDEVILLE to Return to NYC With Live and Screening Events
Baba Israel, Grace Galu, and Duv perform at Nublu, followed by a Cinema Village screening of the La MaMa production.
Cannabis! A Viper Vaudeville will return to downtown New York this spring following its debut at La MaMa Experimental Theater Club in 2022. Blending memorable music, visceral movement and dynamic design, the production unfolds as a genre-defying theatrical experience. On April 27, the show's core artists will perform songs from the show at Nublu. On May 4, the full 2022 La MaMa production will be screened for the first time, at Cinema Village and followed by a freestyle performance and Q&A with the creative team.
Cannabis! A Viper Vaudeville is an uplifting experience that explores the relationship between cannabis and American culture. The show moves through the last century of resistance movements, immersing audiences in the stories of historic activists and the music of those eras. It traces cannabis as a thread running through American history and social justice movements. The show teems with music and dance that express resistance and hope, from Congo Square to the jazz age, from the '60s to Hip-Hop traditions of the mashup and the remix.
The April 27 preview at Nublu features Baba Israel as the Mystical Magical MC, fresh off his run of Word. Sound. Power. at BAM; with Grace Galu as Sativa Diva, and Duv as Hipster Trickster, alongside the show's full band. DJ Rickman of the Lift Up series opens the evening, followed by an appearance from multi-platinum producer Siba, a French-American MC, DJ, and producer who founded Get Open, the hip-hop collective Baba was part of in the '90s. A DJ set, dance party, and cypher and jam session follow. Dazed dispensary is a sponsor of the April 27 Lift Up.
The May 4 Cinema Village screening presents the full 2022 production in a high-quality multi-camera film. This special stage-on-screen experience is being shown publicly for the very first time, with Nic Benacerraf's striking environment design featuring David Bengali's captivating projections and Kate Fry's dazzling costumes and a thrilling cast of rising star talents. A red carpet and step-and-repeat will precede the screening, with a smoke break at intermission, a post-show freestyle with a Q&A hosted by key members of the creative team.
