Broadway in South Africa's Second Annual Benefit is less than two weeks away and now, more than ever, they need your support. Over the course of two weeks in January 2009, Broadway in South Africa conducted 54 hours of hands-on workshops and programming for over 400 under privileged children in the townships of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
They were able to see first-hand how powerful arts education can be as a tool for success. In addition to building confidence, self-esteem and self-awareness, they were also able to increase literacy, bridge the gap between local communities and, most importantly, give more than 400 children the ability to dream of a future beyond poverty, child abuse, gang violence and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. An article published this week in the New York Times threatened that post-apartheid South Africa is "at grave risk of producing...another lost generation, entrenching the racial and class divide rather than bridging it. Half the students never make it to 12th grade."Every dollar takes them one step closer to being able to accomplish our work.
