AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE Comes to Union Theatre in Southwark

Arthur Miller's rarely seen adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's thriller 'An Enemy of the People' opened at the Union Theatre in Southwark last week to sell-out performances. Set in the Trump era, Phil Willmott's bold staging and talented cast is attracting new and diverse audiences.

An Enemy of the People is running as part of a series of productions in the Essential Classics 2019 Season: ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE. Established by multi award-winning director Phil Willmott, this is the fourth classical season introducing new audiences to great writers of the past who have reflected on issues we face today. The line-up also features a new musical, Can-Can! adapted from Offenbach's frivolous operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and Othello, William Shakespeare's classic tale of jealousy, passion and revenge.

An Enemy of the People was originally written by Ibsen in 1882 and then adapted by Miller in 1950; Miller's version has not been staged professionally in London for nearly 30 years. He adapted this work during the same period as writing The Crucible and brings razor sharp psychological precision to Ibsen's timely play about a rebel scientist fighting to expose a corrupt regime and press.

Despite having been written and adapted years ago, this fascinating thriller is just as relevant today and rips the lid off the ever-increasing climate of political power struggles, aggression and fake news pitted against science, truth and reason. It could not be more relevant for today's audiences.

Set in a small spa town, Kirsten Springs, Dr Thomas Stockmann (David Mildon) discovers the spring waters are polluted and strongly believes this is a likely source of sickness. He decides to alert the town and speak the unpalatable truth, challenging the powerful Mayor Stockmann (Mary Stewart) and other officials who have vested interests in the spa resort. Science and politics collide with terrible consequences.

Arthur Miller's 'An Enemy of the People' runs until 2nd February 2019 at the Union Theatre in Southwark.
