Shakespeare 505/Measure for Measure at Aux Dog Theatre Nob Hill

Welcome to present day Albuquerque, where illegal brothels, STDs, meth, car theft and illegitimate children are a dime a dozen. Duke Vincentio is fed up with the sinful ways of his people, but he also doesn't want to be the bad guy who enforces the Burque's strict sex laws. So, the Duke announces he's heading out of town for a while and leaves a super-strict deputy named Angelo in charge during his absence. Hopefully, Angelo will clean up the streets of ABQ. Since ABQ's laws haven't been enforced in about fourteen years, Angelo wastes no time arresting Claudio and then sentences him to death for having sex outside of marriage with Julietta, who is about to have their baby. He then demands that Isabella, Claudio’s sister, have sex with him in order to save her brother. Measure for Measure, written between 1603 and 1604, is seen as one of Shakespeare’s problem plays due to its shifts in mood, at moments comedy at others drama but it is categorized as a comedy.
