State Theatre Company joins forces with Sydney Theatre Company once again in 2014 to produce a new play from the acclaimed Australian writer Sue Smith. Having rehearsed in Adelaide, and following a critically acclaimed season in Sydney, Kryptonite will return to Adelaide for a season at the Space Theatre. A play for our times, Kryptonite is a thought-provoking premiere production that dissects the tricky question of our relationship with China and Australia's place in the Asian century.

Kryptonite is an inventive, incisive, time-leaping political thriller which traces the fortunes of two students from a Sydney university, to China, and then to Parliament House in Canberra as their careers and relationships intertwine, peak and implode.

Dylan is a carefree, charismatic but brilliant boy from the Northern beaches and Lian an introverted exchange student. As years pass their paths continue to cross; he is now a left wing politician whose career is solidly in ascendance while she has returned to China as a senior executive. They are drawn inexorably closer until the personal and the political start to blur with shocking consequences for both.

Playwright Sue Smith is one of the country's finest film and television writers, with a career spanning over thirty years. Her credits include television programs Mabo (for which she won a 2012 Australian Writers' Guild AWGIE Award), Bastard Boys, Brides of Christ, My Brother Jack, The Leaving of Liverpool and feature film Peaches. She has also worked as a script consultant and editor on many other projects. Over the last few years she has turned her focus to writing for the theatre with notable successes including Strange Attractor (Griffin Theatre).

Kryptonite brings back together the central pairing that created State Theatre Company's acclaimed production for the 2013 Adelaide Festival, The Kreutzer Sonata (Sue Smith and director Geordie Brookman) - the production that was described as "something magical and miraculous - the show for which Festival 2013 will be vividly remembered".

Sue Smith said "I'm delighted to continue my collaboration with Geordie and the State Theatre Company on my new play. The Company is fast developing a reputation as a place that values and invests in Australian playwrights".

"The result is a series of revelations that is beautifully orchestrated" THE AUSTRALIAN

"Directed by Geordie Brookman, this co-production between the STC and the State Theatre Company of South Australia is a handsome one." SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
