Diarmaid MacCulloch is currently the Professor of the History of the Church at the University of Oxford and this presentation showed very clearly why he has held this prestigious post since 1997. This conversation, hosted by Barney Zwartz as part of the Adelaide Writers' Week, revolved around two of his most recent prize winning publications, A History of Christianity, and Silence. MacCulloch is an eloquent, succinct and insightful speaker who is easily able to engage and entertain a diverse audience. MacCulloch's latest work has focused on some of the missing or unexplained pieces of church history or, as he put it, the 'silences' of church history. These 'silences' are highly intriguing pieces of history and are often not only insightful, but also humorous. Moreover, MacCulloch is prepared to present humorous pieces of history as just that, and to not only praise, but criticise Christianity, based on the findings of his very fine research.Reader Reviews
