Adelaide Festival Centre Presents A DANCE REVOLUTION

By: Jun. 23, 2014

A Dance Revolution exhibition showcases the famous billowing tulle and decorative creations of dance greats who have influenced Australian classical ballet in the early 20th century. The notable items on display in this beautiful exhibition celebrate the cultural exchanges of international icons who have left their mark on Adelaide, illustrating the prominence of these people and their influence on young, aspiring dancers.

On display in the Festival Theatre Foyer from 6 June until 26 August, the exhibition will feature costumes from famed dancers who have toured Australia, including South Australian dancers Leonie Leahy and Garry Norman, as well as Sir Robert Helpmann and Agnes Babicheva. These costumes derive from well-known productions such as Australian Ballet's Swan Lake, La Rondino and the famed film, Don Quixote.

The exhibition also features photographs, books, artists' drawings and attire from famous international dance figures.

A Dance Revolution reflects the influence of international dancers like Borovansky and Kirsova who immigrated to Adelaide leaving the legacy of their technique and excellence with local dancers - as well as their dazzling and diminutive costumes.

Adelaide Festival Centre's Performing Arts Collection Exhibition Coordinator Jo Peoples says:

"We are pleased to present such a comprehensive collection of dance memorabilia and stories in this premiere exhibition."

"The Collection holds wonderful dance memorabilia thanks to Meg Abbie-Denton, a member of the Performing Arts collection Advisory Committee for many years. Meg was a dancer, dance notator, dance historian and physiotherapist. A tireless worker for the preservation of dance history, she targeted local dancers and collected their histories. What is on display is but a sample of the stories she collected, and this exhibition is dedicated to her."

Step back in time this winter with this historic and exciting exhibition which celebrates the glamour and mystique of dance in the early 20th Century.
