Adelaide Cinematheque Season One Kicks Off 3/27

By:

South Australia's only film society, Adelaide Cinémathèque, kicks off its 26th year by revisiting the world's most famous spy in one of his most lauded outings.

Launching on Thursday, March 27 with a 50th anniversary screening of Goldfinger starring the undisputed finest Agent 007 - Sean Connery, Cinémathèque's 2014 season brings the best films from around the world and across history to the big screen.

"There is something about going to the cinema that just can't be replicated by watching a film at home," says Cinémathèque curator Mat Kesting.

"Directors make movies to be watched in the cinema, and with Cinémathèque we give the movies you've always wanted to see the chance to shine in their full glory on the silver screen."

Part crash course in film appreciation and part club for movie lovers, Cinémathèque is making some slight amendments to its schedule to capitalise on Adelaide's new bustling evening economy.

"We're starting the films a little earlier this year -the screenings will be at 6.30pm," says Mat. "We want people to be able to wander in, have a drink and wind down while watching the films after work and then wander out afterwards and take the most of the West End's burgeoning dining culture."

2014's Season One program highlights include a mini-series from the Coen Brothers incorporating their debut feature-length film Blood Simple, the Academy Award-winning Fargo and off-the-wall cult classic The Big Lebowsksi.

A retrospective of Isabella Rosellini's screen roles, especially David Lynch's Blue Velvet, will draw in an audience freshly enchanted by her recent appearance at the Adelaide Festival. And a screening of the director's cut of the film known as "the Citizen Kane of horror movies" - The Wicker Man: The Final Cut should have viewers glued by fear to the seats of the Mercury Cinema.

Designed to satisfy South Australia's cinema buffs with rarely seen cinema masterpieces, and to entertain the rest of us with creatively told, interesting stories - Cinémathèque sells affordable multipasses that lets the cinema-goer commit to as little as four sessions for $40 or as much as a full year of viewing for just $129.

Screenings are only available to society members, but anyone can join and becoming a Cinémathèque member is easy and great value. For more information about Season One or to become a member visit www.mercurycinema.org.au or phone 08 8410 0979
