Adelaide Assumes Role As Australia's Only UNESCO City Of Music Celebrated By Lonely Planet

Two years after becoming Australia's first and only UNESCO City of Music in 2015, Adelaide's live music venues, festivals, musicians and laneways continue to be recognised on a national and international level, with Lonely Planet's Culture Trails publication recently naming Adelaide "Australia's live music city".

Adelaide Festival Centre manages the Office for Adelaide UNESCO City of Music with the support of the City of Adelaide and the Government of South Australia's Department of State Development through the Music Development Office. Adelaide is the only UNESCO City of Music in Australia and is one of the 180 cities in 72 countries within the UNESCO Creative Cities network which works to place creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level, and cooperating actively at the international level.

Rebecca Pearce, Director for the Office of Adelaide UNESCO City of Music, says "It's wonderful that Lonely Planet has recognised many of the features that make Adelaide's music scene so rich and memorable. It's something we should all be extremely proud of celebrating. Adelaide has been recognised for the depth and diversity of its musical traditions and its commitment to a thriving live music scene.

''With more cities joining the UNESCO network, there is increased reach, and more opportunity for Adelaide artists and musicians to work with these cities. Some exciting plans for collaborations are on the horizon in the near future!'

More South Australian musical talent was recently recognised at the 2017 ARIA Awards, with recipients including A.B. Original (Best Urban Album and Best Independent Release), Sia (Best Female Artist), Renee McCarthy (Music Teacher of the Year, Woodcroft College), and current Adelaide Guitar Festival Artistic Director Slava Grigoryan (Best Classical Album).

South Australian musicians were also a forceful presence at the National Live Music Awards with Electric Fields (SA: Live Act of the Year); Zaachariaha Fielding from Electric Fields (SA: Live Voice of the Year); A.B. Original (Hip Hop Live Act of the Year); Grace Emily Hotel (SA: Live Venue of the Year) and Clarity Records (SA: Live Event of the Year) all recognised for their contributions to the state's vibrant live music scene.
