Round House Theatre Producing Artistic Director Ryan Rilette has announced the company's lineup of education and outreach programs for the 2013/14 season. They include a diverse selection of programs that allow people of all ages to experience the joy of theater.

Programs for youth:

Saturday Morning Classes for Pre-K - 8th grade

The theme of our new Saturday classes at the Round House Theatre Education Center is "Stories Come Alive." Students experience the elements of theater through storytelling. In each class, students will dive into the world of an exciting tale, exploring themes, creating characters, and bringing the story to life. This class culminates in a sharing of highlights and favorite stories.

Fall Session: September 21 - November 9, 2013
Winter Session: January 25 - March 15, 2014
Tuition: $100 per student per session

Days Off

A full day of theatrical fun for grades K - 5 at our Education Center when Montgomery County Public Schools are closed.

Dates: October 18, November 1, 2013, January 21, March 28, April 14 thru 18, April 21, 2014
Programming Day: 9am - 5pm
Sign up per day, for the entire 10 days, or just Spring Break
Pre-registration required
Tuition: $75 per day; $600 for all 10 days; $390 for the 6 days of MCPS Spring Break

Free First Friday

Celebrate the first Friday of every month with a free theater class with Round House. The RHT Education Center opens its doors to the community on the first Friday of select months from 4:30pm to 5:30pm for free theater classes for pre-K through 8th grade students. Each class stands on its own, and introduces actors to a new and fun theatre topic.

Dates: September 6, October 4, December 6, 2013, January 3, February 7, March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, 2014
No pre-registration is required; however class size is limited
Students in the Pre-K class must be accompanied but a participating caregiver

Programs for Teens:

Master Classes for 8th - 12th grade

Teens develop their skills in these full day workshops with local theater professionals. From learning to nail that big audition to stage combat techniques these Master Classes will make for a fun and informative day.

Stage Combat (October 5, 2013), with a certified fight choreographer
Audition Boot Camp (November 2,2013)
Theater Production (December 7, 2013)
Saturdays, 10am - 5pm, students self-dismiss for lunch and at the end of the program day
Tuition: $75 per session, or $200 for all 3
Location: Round House Theatre Rehearsal Room in the Silver Spring Civic Building

Internships

Hands-on experience for high school and college students exploring theater administration, education, and production

The Sarah Metzger Memorial Play

The Sarah Play is a pre-professional program for the next generation of theater artists. The production is directed, designed, stage managed, and performed by high school students from across the DC area. Students selected shadow productions on the RHT mainstage, attend events and master classes with RHT company members, and work closely with professional artists and practitioners at every step of the process. This year's performances will take place April 4 - 12, 2014 at Round House Silver Spring. Rehearsals begin in January.

Student Matinees

Student Matinees provides school groups with a unique package of opportunities and resources designed to engage, educate, and entertain. This season's Student Matinees are August Wilson's Two Trains Running on April 9 and April 23, 2014 at 10am at Round House Theatre Bethesda.

Subsidized tickets priced on a sliding-scale basis (average $10 a ticket)
One free adult chaperone ticket for every ten student tickets purchased
Facilitated post-show discussions immediately follow every matinee performance

Programs for ADULTS:

Scene Study with Jerry Whiddon

Build on existing performance skills without the pressure of an impending opening night. Working with actor/director Jerry Whiddon on 2-3 person scenes, the focus of this class will be on character, circumstance, objective/intention/action, obstacles - and the challenges of working on a moment or a scene. Ages 18 and up.

September 23 - October 14, 2013
Monday 7pm - 9pm
Tuition: $150 per 4-week session
Location: Round House Theatre Education Center

Stage Combat- Fall Session Single Sword Swashbuckling

The course covers the skills needed to perform dynamic, controlled, and effective sword fights for the stage, with an emphasis on technique, footwork, and safety. Students will explore physical storytelling and how to connect stage combat techniques to text, character, and intention. No experience is necessary, but experienced stage fighters will find the class rewarding as well. For ages 18 and up.

October 7 - November 11, 2013
Monday 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Tuition: $150 per 6-week session
Location: Round House Theatre Rehearsal Room in the Silver Spring Civic Building

Stage Combat- Winter Session Single Sword Swashbuckling 2

Building on the material covered in the Fall Session, this class will prepare students for adjudication with the Society of American Fight Directors. The course will conclude with a fight performance, choreographed by the instructor and set to a scene. Students that pass will receive Society of American Fight Director's recognition in Single Sword - the industry standard and ideal for the professional resume. Ages 18 and up.

January 13 - February 17, 2014
Monday 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Tuition: $150 per 6-week session
Location: Round House Theatre Rehearsal Room in the Silver Spring Civic Building

Both Stage Combat sessions are taught by Casey Kaleba (Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors). The fall session partially satisfies the requirements for skills testing with the Society of American Fight Directors. Those interested in testing with the Society of American Fight Directors will need to register for both sections.

Creating the Physical Character with Mark Jaster

Special topics in mime, physical comedy, and committed physicality for the actor. Mark offers favorite exercises he's found especially useful, addressing stillness, focus, simplicity, clarity, contact, control, commitment, projection, illusion, and rhythm. Ages 18 and up.

May 5 - 26, 2014
Monday 7pm - 9pm
Tuition: $150 per 4-week session.
