Kensington Arts Theatre Artistic Director Craig Pettinati is pleased to announce the DC-Metro theatre has decided to venture into uncharted territory, with the expansion of offerings to now include both musicals and plays.

Starting next season, KAT will be offering audiences one play in the middle of the season, sandwiched by two musicals. '70s Rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar will remain the season opener this Fall, followed by The Laramie Project in the Winter of 2016. Closing the season next Spring is the 2013 Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Musical, Pippin.

KAT looks forward to providing thought provoking theatre that challenges the world and our unconscious assumptions to a broader spectrum of theatergoers.

UPDATED KENSINGTON ARTS THEATRE 2015-2016 SEASON:

Fall 2015

Jesus Christ Superstar

Book/Lyrics by Tim Rice
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber Director: Craig Pettinati
Music Director: Stuart Weich Producer: John Nunemaker

Based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus' life, Jesus Christ Superstar highlights the political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, seen through Judas' eyes. Contemporary attitudes and sensibilities, as well as slang, pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events.

Winter 2016

The Laramie Project*
By Moisés Kaufman

Director: John Nunemaker

October 6th, 1998. A twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody, bruised and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay.

Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. They conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town, some of whom were directly connect, and some who were not. THE LARAMIE PROJECT is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.

Spring 2016

Pippin
Book by Roger O. Hirson
Music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz

Director: Ryan Burke
Music Director: Marci Shegogue
Producer: John Nunemaker

A mysterious performance troupe, led by the Leading Player, tell the story of Pippin, a young prince (son of Charlemagne) on his search for meaning and significance (with very little historical accuracy,) all the while, promising a grand finale like never before.

Further announcements and casting calls will be at a later date. Complete information will be found online at www.katonline.org.
