It is certainly isn't a bad sign when the two-year old in the front row gets up to dance with the music.

She, along with the rest of us, was catapulted into the 20th century to hear a musical history. We heard the music that represented an escape and an outlet for African Americans as they worked their way through time, from being slaves in this country to being free, and all along fighting for their rights.

"Shake Loose: A Musical Night of Blues, Moods, & Icons," a world premiere, is more of a mash up than traditional musical, of the amazing repertoire of the artistic team at MetroStage. The show's book is comprised all of original music from Thomas W. Jones II, William Hubbard, and William Knowles. It must have been a task to choose merely 39 songs of their almost 350 songs composed over a 20 year time period.

Although a challenge, the moment the music started "Shake Loose" was clearly a labor of love, and a successful one at that. Thanks to the direction of Jones and the stellar cast, this play feels like an intimate concert of your favorite group, where the theatrical fourth wall isn't much of a wall at all. Even in the back row I felt like an involved member of the audience.

The cast, made up of Rayshun LaMarr, Anthony Manough, Roz White, and Lori Williams, were all (without surprise) amazing vocalists. Their talents and stage presence would have been enough to get them through the show. However, as actors it was a treat to see their individual personalities shine through the music and brief monologues. Also, everyone just seemed so happy to be there.

The show would have been incomplete without the six member band playing on stage with the actors. The band, conducted by Knowles on piano, brought their own personality. Bringing them on stage as well, was important for the time period represented and giving the show a more intimate feeling.

Because of the nature of this show, "Shake Loose" is perfect for long time MetroStage fans or for newcomers who want a taste of their diverse and beautiful talent. The only thing I would say is lacking is a dance floor so the brave two-year-olds out there can really show what they can do.

"Shake Loose: A Musical Night of Blues, Moods, & Icons" run through March 6 at MetroStage, 1201 North Royal St. Alexandria, VA. For tickets call 703.548.9044 or go to their website.

Runtime is about 2 hours with a 15 minute intermission.
