Singer N'dambi to Appear at Jazz Hall of Fame, 8/12

Grammy award nominee N'dambi, whose album "Pink Elephant" was the first release for the relaunch of the legendary soul label Stax Records, will perform Friday, August 12th at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, 111 E. First St. Local favorites Charlie Redd & The Full Flava Kings will open the show.

A native of Dallas, N'dambi was born Chonita Gilbert and grew up in a household where her father, a Baptist preacher, allowed only gospel and country music to be heard. But once she heard Millie Jackson's version of "If Loving You is Wrong," N'dambi knew she wanted to pursue that avenue of expression.

She got her start as a background singer - first for gospel artist Gaye Arbuckle, then with fellow Dallas native Erykah Badu. She also changed her given name for a West African word meaning "the most beautiful."

N'dambi released three independent albums before signing with Stax to produce "Pink Elephant," which was nominated for a 2010 Grammy for Best Engineered Non-Classical Album.

N'dambi will be appearing at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame on Friday, August 12. Doors open at 8 p.m. Friday, show begins at 9 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Reserved seating, $85 for four, $185 for eight.
