When Lauren Robert powerfully performed her early August show at Iridium Jazz Club, her 12-song set of blues, R&B and gospel tunes included four original songs off her recently-released CD, Listen-I Mean It. But if her live show was just offering a titillating CD tease, the disc itself is a soulful seduction-a 15-song package of passion, intimacy, vulnerability, and risk, all wrapped in lyrical expressiveness, melodic intensity, and some of the best blues/rock/gospel singing to come down the pike since Janis asked the Lord to buy her a Mercedes Benz. Saxophonist Lee Konitz, guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Joey Baron return to the Blue Note for a weeklong run in anticipation of their upcoming release Enfants Terribles (2012), available commercially on Half Note Records September 25th. The group features four veteran jazzmen whose collective efforts on stage and in the studio span decades. Timothy Haskell, Creator of NIGHTMARE (New York's most horrifying haunted house and AOL CityGuide's No. 1 rated haunted attraction in NYC), and Steve Kopelman, producer of THE NEST (named ABC News / Good Morning America's "Scariest Place in America") will present KILLERS: A NIGHTMARE HAUNTED HOUSE - a horrifying, immersive haunted house experience about our obsession and fascination with serial killers both real and fictional. Dance New Amsterdam (DNA) welcomes back Tami Stronach Dance to the 2012-2013 DNA PRESENTS season to present the world premiere of Me and Not Me, a duet which first debuted as a work in progress during DNA PRESENTS' OBject.obJECT series in 2009. The program also includes repertory favorite Mother Tongue, a solo danced by Stronach, and Closer, a piece currently in the making, which uses video cameras strapped to the dancers' bodies to provide the audience with alternative viewpoints. It may be the final week of Lincoln Center Out of Doors, but the festival isn't winding down when it comes to exciting performances. This week, Lincoln Center celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the landmark Soul at the Center, highlighted by Valerie Simpson's first tribute to her late partner, Nick Ashford, since his passing. The pair that wrote such Motown hits as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)," and "I'm Every Woman," made their performing debut as a duo at Lincoln Center 40 years ago. The New York premiere of a poignant oratorio about a frontier tragedy and Britten's equally unsettling War Requiem frame the Oratorio Society of New York's 2012/13 concert season at Carnegie Hall. Kent Tritle will lead the 200-voice chorus, New York City's second-oldest cultural organization, in its 140th season. Also this season, the Oratorio Society will perform Handel's beloved Messiah, as it has every year since 1874.
