Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic, America's oldest orchestra, came to Walt Disney Concert Hall in the final event of the LA Phil's 2011/12 Visiting Orchestras series, this Wednesday, May 9. Virtuoso pianist Yefim Bronfman joined the program, performing the West Coast premiere of Piano Concerto No. 2, by New York Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence Magnus Lindberg. Also on the program were Dvorak's Carnival Overture and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. Though Gilbert had previously appeared at Walt Disney Concert Hall (WDCH), most recently during the 2006/07 season, the performance was the New York Philharmonic's WDCH debut. The Brooklyn Arts Exchange presents Salón by Mariangela Lopez today May 11 through may 13 as part of the BAX's Artist-In Residency program. Salón investigates the personas inhabited in a social event; the struggle and the need to interact with strangers; the urge to see and to be seen; the ways in which people include or exclude themselves in a social experience. Salón explores the social need of dance, proposing an avenue where people can expose themselves to other, accessing an exchange that is animistic and vital. (more...)

Amore Opera concludes its third season with Verdi's masterpiece, La Traviata, conducted by Gregory Ortega, and staged by Amore Opera's Artistic Director, Nathan Hull. La Traviata, an opera in three acts, is the tragic love story of the famed French courtesan with a heart of gold, Violetta, and her arduous suitor, Alfredo Germont. Although they risk everything to be together, their pure and devoted love is thwarted by societal pressures and, ultimately, death. La Traviata is presented in repertoire from tonight, May 11th through the 27th. (more...)

The Film Society of Lincoln Center previously announced the schedule for COWARD ON FILM (May 11-13), which runs in conjunction with the ongoing citywide festival STAR QUALITY: THE WORLD OF NOËL COWARD honoring the British playwright, actor, director and composer. The series will trace the breadth of his film work, which ranges from British silent and sound adaptations of his early plays to the later prestige productions of his works made in Hollywood. Notable films from his multi-film collaboration with the young David Lean will also be highlighted, as well as his celebrated cameo appearances in others' films. (more...)

New York City Ballet's 2012 Spring Gala tonight, May 10 will feature a one-time-only salute to France titled À La Francaise, and will feature two World Premiere ballets, one by NYCB's Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins to a score by the French composer Marc-Andre Dalbavie; and one by French-born choreographer and former NYCB Principal Dancer Benjamin Millepied to a commissioned score by Nico Muhly. The evening will also include a major revival of George Balanchine's Symphony in C, which was created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947 to a score by the French composer Georges Bizet. (more...)

RIOULT, a leading American modern dance company with a classic sensibility, previously announced its four-day 2012 NY Season at The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, May 10-13, 2012 with a family matinee May 13, 2012. The Season features the World Premiere of Artistic Director/Choreographer Pascal Rioult's new work, The Violet Hour, inspired by T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" with a commissioned score by Grammy-Winning composer Joan Tower. The World Premiere will be performed at each evening performance to live musical accompaniment with Joan Tower at the piano, and cellist Raman Ramakrishnan. The program also includes RIOULT's Firebird (2003) and Celestial Tides, which captivated audiences at its premiere at The Joyce Theater in 2011. (more...)
