Interview: David Harris Returns to OZ

Aussie musical theatre fans, David Harris has returned to Oz - but only for a flying visit! Our homegrown leading man - the star of many of Australia's hit productions, from MISS SAIGON to WICKED to LEGALLY BLONDE - now calls New York home. But we get him back to the Australian stage for two nights this weekend, when he joins Sutton Foster, Aaron Tveit, Betty Buckley, Joanna Ampil and Helen Dallimore in DEFYING GRAVITY - a world premiere concert celebrating the work of Stephen Schwartz.

A firm favourite of BroadwayWorld Oz (we've seen him own the stage from Shanghai to Sydney!), we set Harris some homework this week. Can he tell us the must-see musicals in New York this season? How much has he embraced the city that never sleeps? And what can he tell us about working with that amazing constellation of stars listed above?

Read on for our FIFO Q&A with David Harris, our much-missed leading man (and the fastest walker in Sydney right now):

BWW: What are the top three things you miss about Australia when you are in New York?

DH: My family. I miss seeing them often, but thank goodness for FaceTime and the ability to chat and video call. It makes the world seem a little smaller.

I really miss the beaches of Sydney. I used to live in Coogee and I would hit the beach often. I really miss the beauty of the coastline and the ability to dive in such a beautiful clean ocean at my doorstep.

I also miss how the food tastes. We really do have great tasting fresh food here in Australia.

BWW: What are the top three things you miss about New York when you are back in Oz?

DH: This is my first trip back to Australia since moving to New York 18 months ago, and I have really noticed how much I miss the pace I am now used to. I have always been a fast walker, and coming back to Sydney, I am reminded how much faster I walk compared to the average Australian. I miss New York pace.

New York has been labeled the place that doesn't sleep and therefore you can find anything you are looking for, close to you, at pretty much any hour. I tried finding a coffee shop open after 6pm this week [in Sydney] and it was a struggle.

I also miss the ease at which you can travel around Manhattan. I do not own a car in NYC, but can get anywhere via subway, bike or by walking really easily. I miss that ability.

BWW: What three shows should every Aussie tourist should catch on Broadway this season?

DH: ON YOUR FEET -The story of Gloria and Emilio Stefan, one that Australians might not know well, and how impactful it was, culturally, for a generation. Plus the choreography is amazing.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, because of the way ballet and musical theatre are interlaced so beautifully on one stage.

I still haven't seen HAMILTON, so can't say exactly why Australians should see it, but everyone is praising it, so if you have the chance...and I wouldn't miss HELLO DOLLY with Bette Midler!

BWW: How would you describe the work of Stephen Schwartz?

DH: A catalogue of great songs, which can be sometimes undervalued. Wittingly crafted "actor songs" designed to tell a great story.

Stephen has been had major success on both the Broadway stage and in movies, and I am privileged to once again be singing his material - and proud to call him a friend.

BWW: What can you tell us about the rehearsal period for DEFYING GRAVITY?

DH: It's quick! A couple of days all together to construct the show and we are on! In saying that, everyone is so disciplined and professional which makes the relatively speedy process so much easier, and everyone is bringing their A-game. It is going to be a brilliant concert and one that Sydney is going to love.

BWW: You've traveled all over the world with DEFYING GRAVITY producer Enda Markey. What's it like working with him, and what does he bring to the Australian theatre scene?

DH: I have been involved in productions of DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING since Enda has been producing them, and have loved working with him on these projects. He is willing to listen and really consider each artist and does so with class and humour.

He has a reputation of pulling together a great cohesive group of artists and crew to present world-class productions here and internationally. He is passionate about combining and showcasing Australian artists with international counterparts, and I am very thankful to be asked to join DEFYING GRAVITY and come back to my hometown of Sydney.

BWW: When will we next see you?!

DH: As soon as there is another great project to bring me back. Although I have dedicated the near future to continue establishing my career in New York, I would love the opportunity to come back, but there are no concrete plans as yet.
