BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37
ELGAR Symphony No. 2 in E-Flat major, Op. 63
This concert spotlights Elgar’s Second Symphony, a deeply personal work described by the composer as “the passionate pilgrimage of the soul”. Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto took over three years to compose, and finally premiered in 1803 with the composer himself at the piano: not having had time to write out the solo part completely, he played almost all of it from memory. Performing this groundbreaking concerto at this SSO concert is the 15-year-old Malaysian prodigy pianist and composer Tengku Ahmad Irfan.
The SSO is deeply saddened by the news that Frank Shipway, who was scheduled to conduct this concert, passed away on 6 August.
