Hugh Grant one of the most well known actors in the world decided to check out the Gold Coast International Film Festival, which is in it's fourth year successful year. The Gold Coast International Film Festival began its seven-day run on Nov. 3rd. It will feature more than 40 short films, art films foreign films and appearances by filmmakers. In just its fourth year, the festival has grown so large and so popular that it will need theaters in Great Neck, Manhasset, Roslyn and Port Washington to accommodate all of the screenings and doings. It was fitting that the World Premiere of "A Voice Among the Silent" was held in the only United States synagogue to be honored with a papal visit in 2008, when Pope Benedict XVI was hosted by the the congregation and Rabbi Arthur Schneier. This eye opening documentary about James McDonald, the son of Catholic immigrants, was almost lost to history until his meticulously kept diaries were discovered in 2003. (more...)

In a true celebration of tradition, Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre's 2014 Season concludes with the nine-time Tony Award-winning: Fiddler on the Roof. This heartwarming musical marks its 50th Anniversary this year, and opens on Oct. 9 at Beef & Boards. Douglas E. Stark reprises his favorite role of Tevye, the milkman, who is the center of this touching story set in the tiny village of Anatevka. Tevye does his best to protect his five daughters and instill them with traditional values, even in the face of changing times and social principles. Lillian Hellman, author of 'The Little Foxes,' which is now in production at the Cleveland Playhouse, was a rebel with many causes. An independent woman in an era before the women's rights and liberation movements, she had strong political and societal opinions. Because of her liberal affiliations she was blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. She was 'a smoker, a drinker, a lover, and a fighter, who took stands against and placed a negative spotlight on greed, ambition and misguided principles.' She was an advocate for the downtrodden. These principles are at the foundation of 'The Little Foxes.' (more...)

Invitations to parties and galas at magnificent private homes in the Hamptons are always coveted but the hottest ducat last week was the lecture by architect, historian Gary Lawrance, co-author with Anne Surchin of Houses of the Hamptons: 1800-1930 held in one of the largest private residences ever built on the East End, Whitefield formerly known as The Orchard. Sponsored by the Southampton Historical Museum, the talk quickly sold out and several hundred guests filled the baronial music room at the sprawling estate. With its soaring, carved mahogany wood walls, coffered ceilings with hand painted embellishments and a fireplace that one could stand inside, the Music Room was the ideal setting for a discussion about the Gilded Age.
